Principle 6

To ensure that the university’s research agenda is informed by the needs of an aging society and to promote public discourse on how higher education can better respond to the varied interests and needs of older adults.

1. UCLA Longevity Center (Semel Institute) — mission: advance research, lifelong learning, and community programs to help people “live better, longer.” Strong match for aligning research with aging needs and public-facing education (memory training, Senior Scholars, webinars).

2. Center for Policy Research on Aging (CPRA), UCLA Luskin — conducts policy research on Social Security, Medicare, long-term care and other aging-related public policy — directly informs the university research agenda and state/national policy conversations.

3. Mary S. Easton Center for Alzheimer’s Research and Care (UCLA Easton Center / ADRC) — major research and outreach hub focused on Alzheimer’s/dementia; includes community outreach and recruitment cores that connect research priorities to the lived needs of older adults and caregivers.

4. California Elder Index (UCLA Health Policy / Fielding School links) — a policy tool measuring the real cost of living for older Californians; it translates research into public-facing data useful for advocacy and policy-making. Aligns research to economic realities older adults face.

5. UCLA Division of Geriatrics & Multicampus Geriatric Programs — clinical, basic, social and behavioral research in geriatrics; good for integrating clinical insights into university research priorities on aging.

  • Long-Term Services and Supports (LTSS) Study

The Long-Term Services and Supports (LTSS) Study aims to understand the experiences of Californians who have difficulties with certain activities of daily life, such as dressing, bathing, walking, or doing errands.

6. Health Equity Program (UCLA Health Policy / related groups) — focuses on health issues among older adults in marginalized communities; helps ensure research agendas reflect diverse aging populations and equity concerns.
